Vīrya: Striving Toward a Worthy Goal

As we reflect upon the goals to which we aspire in this precious human life, we consider the Buddha’s teachings on diligence, the virtue of making effort for the benefit of others without laziness or negligence.

Ikkō Ikki: Nembutsu Uprisings

This talk was given on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom Meeting.

In 15th and 16th Century Japan, Jodo Shinshu priests, warriors, peasant farmers and merchants joined forces to create and defend communities grounded in the Nembutsu teaching.

Everyone is Welcomed

A century ago on July 14, 1920, Buddhist Mission of North America Bishop Koyu Uchida submitted a letter to the House Committee on Immigration and Naturalization during the hearings on Japanese Immigration, in which he declared the following the purpose of our Buddhist organization:

. . . the salvation of mankind through spiritual enlightenment, and the realization of universal brotherhood and fraternal love as taught by the Lord Buddha, the enlightened one, 2,500 years ago.

Momotaro (Peach Boy) Story and Dharma Talk

On Sunday, June 28, 2020, we were delighted to welcome Mary Jo Kubota Sensei from our SMBT Summer Terakoya teaching team to share a traditional kamishibai telling of story of Momotaro, the Adventures of Peach Boy in English during our Zoom Dharma Service.  Rev. Henry’s Dharma Talk highlighted the Buddhist themes in this beloved children’s tale of Japan.
