Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Memorial: Knowing Suffering and Awakening Compassion (August 3)

As we mark the 80th Anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Rev. Henry will reflect upon a conversation he had with one of his mentoring ministers in Japan, whose childhood experience of the blast in Hiroshima and its aftermath inspired him to share the Nembutsu teaching with aspiring Buddhist ministers and Christian theologians from the United States.

As we remember the lives taken by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Rev. Adams will reflect on his encounters with Sangha members who have first-hand memories of the bombs that were dropped 79 years ago, and how the example of these wise elders shows us the path to peace in our world today.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Memorial: How We Remember (August 6)

As we remember the lives taken by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Rev. Adams will share impressions of the recent film “Oppenheimer” and consider how what we choose to remember and how remember the past impacts the way we live in the present moment, inspired by the following verse from the “Hymn of True Shinjin and the Nembutsu (Shoshinge)“:

[Nagarjuna] teaches that the moment one thinks on Amida’s Primal Vow,
One is naturally brought to enter the stage of the definitely settled;
Solely saying the Tathagata’s Name constantly,
One should respond with gratitude to the universal Vow of great compassion.

We will remember the lives lost during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in conjunction with part five of our summer Dharma Talk series on the Seven Gifts that Do Not Require Possessions.

The gift of a generous heart (心施 shin-se): To freely give assistance to others without resenting any inconvenience it may cause for oneself.

BCA Bishop’s Memorial: Rev. Shinsho Hanayama’s Gift of Peaceful Facial Expressions (July 3)

Rev. Adams will share his appreciation for Rev. Shinsho Hanayama, who expressed the Buddha’s wish for peace by serving as a chaplain to the condemned inmates at the Sugamo Prison in Tokyo and by promoting greater awareness and understanding of Buddhism in the United States as Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America.

The Way to a Peaceful World (February 27)

In this world of continuing conflict, the compassionate vows of Amida Buddha guide us to a live with kindness and understanding for others.  The 19th Vow affirms that those who practice goodness will be welcomed into the world of peace and bliss:

If, when I attain Buddhahood, the sentient beings of the ten quarters, while awakening the mind aspiring for enlightenment and performing meritorious acts, should desire to be born in my land with sincere aspiration, and yet should I not appear before them at the moment of death surrounded by a host of sages, may I not attain the perfect enlightenment.
